Christmas and New Year get the headlines, but many experienced charterers prefer the weeks that follow. From late January to March the trade winds are settled, the weather is usually dry and sunny, and there is more choice of yachts than over the holidays. For anyone escaping a European or North American winter, it is a very good time to be on the water.
Why February and March Work So Well
- Reliable weather. This is the heart of the dry season, well away from the hurricane months.
- More choice. Outside the festive fortnight, more yachts are available and minimum stays are usually more flexible.
- Calmer harbours. Popular anchorages are less crowded than over New Year.
- Half-term and spring breaks. School holidays in February and March make it a natural fit for families. These weeks are popular, so plan ahead.
Where to Go
- The British Virgin Islands: short passages and sheltered water, ideal for families.
- St Barths, St Martin and Anguilla: beaches, fine dining and a calmer Gustavia after the holidays.
- Antigua and Barbuda: historic harbours, reefs and empty beaches.
- The Grenadines: remote anchorages and turtles in the Tobago Cays.
When to Book
